From The Tanjore Court To The Madras Music Academy Essays In The Making Of A Modern Classical Tradition Tracing the evolution of carnatic music. A book by Lakshmi Subramaniam
This book traces the adaptation of the traditional classical music in south India to the necessities of colonial and post-colonial social realities. In moving from the quiet courtyards of Tanjore to the concert halls of madras, the social context of music and performance underwent a striking transformation. Traditional music was also used in the freedom movement as an emblem of India’s uniqueness and independent identity. Departing from conventional scholarship on the subject, Lakshmi Subramaniam presents a distinctive classical tradition. Subramaniam traces the changes in traditional music in south India as it adapted to the necessities of colonial and postcolonial social realities. |

MUMBAI: The event was rare. They were getting together after a very long number of years for some great music, which was not to be. The event turned shocking with Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar accusing tabla whiz Ustad Zakir Hussain of "unprofessional and immature" conduct while performing with him at Shanmukhananda Hall here on Saturday evening. In the middle of the concert and in front of a shocked audience of 3,000-odd music lovers, Zakir Hussain yanked the microphone from its stand in front of his tablas . Panditji was playing Maaj Khamaaj at the time. Hussain was upset with the quality of the tabla sound. He had indicated to the sound technician that the volume of his microphone should be adjusted, but apparently nothing was done. Zakir's act upset the audience since it could only hear Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka. They kept up a steady chant of "We want tabla", following which Zakir put the microphone back in its place and continued playing. |

This news will certainly be music to many. After all, it's not often that two of India's greatest music maestros -- Ustad Zakir Hussain and Pt Ravi Shankar -- both Ustaad Zakir Hussain from the north indian classical music arena, perform together on the same stage. The two Indian classical musicians will come together for the first time in 15 years for a rare concert on February 11 at the Shri Shanmukhnanda Hall, in Sion.
Shashi Vyas, Director, Pancham Nishad, who is organising the concert along with One India One People foundation agrees that this is indeed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. |
