Krishna Bhakti Dr.Jayanthi Raman Musical Dance Ballet of India Research, concept, principal dancer, & choreographer: Dr. Jayanthi Raman 2004 NDP grant award recipient & Artistic Director of Gajamukha dance ballet
Portland dancer/choreographer Jayanthi Raman's new multi-media dance project 'Krishna Bhakti' follows her National Dance Project-sponsored, critically acclaimed, tour of 'Gajamukha' in 2004. Raman gathers some of India’s most illustrious musicians and dancers for this kaleidoscope of India’s arts and cultures. In this production, Raman uniquely choreographs to blend two classical Indian dance forms, as well folk traditions and the martial arts.
Embracing both the South and North Indian classical music and dance styles, this ballet truly reflects the best of India in featuring music and dances from different corners of the land presented seamlessly for global audiences. The ballet is based on the lives and poetry of two mystic saintly women - Andal and Meerabai, devotees of Krishna and features the enchanting lyrics written by these saintly women
