Bharata Nătyam - Indian classical dance style from South India
Kathak - Indian classical dance style from North India mainly Jaipur and Lucknow
Kuchipudi - Classical dance style from Kuchipudi village in Andhra Pradesh
Mohiniattam - Classical dance style from South Indian state of Kerala.
Odissi - Classical dance style from Orissa (India)
Kathakali - Indian classical dance drama of Kerala, a state in south India.
Nritta - Pure dance involving hand and body movements
Nritya - Interpretative aspect of dance involving Abhinaya

Thillana
- A lively musical form, usually set to be rendered in brisk pace. It is the Carnatic counterpart of the North Indian 'tarana'.
Rangapravesam or Arangetram -
This is the blossoming of the student of Bharatnatyam into a full-fledged artist and enters the stage for the first time.
Mudhras
are a means of communication for
the dancer to express the theme of the song. Common in south Indian classical dance.
Adavus-
are the basic steps taught to the students in Bharatanatyam.

Terms used in Indian classical music   
Karnatic Music/Carnatic Music - the classical music of South India.
Hindustani Music - North Indian classical music.
Rag/Raga/Ragam: A melodic concept within certain strict rules. Ragas are groups of notes that organise melody.Common in Indian classical music.
Tal/Tala/Talam :A time cycle, a rhythm structure and a measure applied in the act of keeping time.Common in Indian classical music.
Laya: Rhythm or Tempo. The tempo is regulated. The duration of rest between two strokes of 'matra' Is laya.Common in Indian classical music
Gharana : A school Of music representing a specific musical lineage or tradition.Term used in North Indian classical music.
Bol - This is the mnemonic system where each stroke of the drum has a syllable attached to it. These syllables are known as bol. Term found in Northy Indian classical music.
Bhajan — a hindu devotional song. Bhajans are sometimes used as light classical repetoire
Mridangam: A percussion instrument which is a common accompaniment in south Indian classical music and dance.
Tabla: A percussion instrument which is a common accompaniment in north Indian classical music and dance.
Guru-Shishya Parampara -The traditional teacher-disciple method of learning all forms of Indian classical music.

Padma Shri Dr.Sunil Kothari
Dr.Sunil Kothari Dr Sunil Kothari is a leading dance historian, scholar, author and critic of Indian classical dances.

He has to his credit more than 12 books on Indian classical dance forms and allied subjects including definitive works on Bharata Natyam, Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Chhau Dances of India, edited volumes on 'RASA', 'Damaru', photo biographies of legendary dancers Uday Shankar and Rukmini Devi, edited volume on 'New Directions In Indian dance' etc.

Dr Kothari was a dance critic of the Times of India group of publications and wrote for the Times of India for 40 years as a dance critic.

Dr Kothari has held several positions: Uday Shankar Professor and Chair , Dance Department, Rabindra Baharti Univeristy, Kolkata: Dean and Professor, School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawharlal Nehru Univerisity, New Delhi; National Porfesor of Dance, Under UGC scheme for two years.

Awards, Fellowships and Honours

Received the civil honour PADMA SHRI from the President of India
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for overall contribution to the field of dance.
Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the Governor of Gujarat.
Awarded Fulbright Fellowship for residencies at The University of Georgia, Athens and The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Seattle.
Travel award under Fulbright Fellowship to guest lecture at the three univesities: University of California: Berkely Riverside and World Arts and Culture, Los Angeles.

Member of the Advisory committee of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, (ICCR)
Former member of the General Council of Sangeet Natak Akademi
Member of the jury for Kalidas Samman, selection of dancers for the 'Festivals of India' held abroad and for Khajuraho Dance Festival etc.
Visiting Professor(Dance) at the School of
Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Resident professor at the Dance Department of New York University, New York, USA for the year 1993 under Asian Cultural Council Fellowship, New York,USA.

Currently a Vice President of the World Dance Alliance, Asia Pacific, South Asia, representing India

Member of the Executive Commiteee of International Dance Council, UNESCO, Paris.

Participated in several international dance conferences both in India and abroad.

Lectured at the Universities in USA: New York Univeristy; University of Georgia, South Asia Department of University of Atlanta, University of Minneapolis/Minnesota, University of California, The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Seattle, University Stony Brook University, Long Island;, University of Houston and various Musuems, The Asia Society, New York, New York Public Library, Lincoln Centre; Swarthmore College, Philadelphia etc.


Dr. Kothari is the vice president of South Asia World Dance Alliance - Asia Pacific.
He is also a fullfledged Chartered Accountant.
