ImageMs Aruna Sairam is today the prima donna of the carnatic music field.

She has captured the imagination of the informed and the laity.

Uncompromising in her strict and deep adherence to tradition and roots, she does not fight shy of innovation which is the hallmark of a true artist.

Each one of her concerts is truly a “complete musical experience” for her listeners.

Over the years, she has enthralled audiences all over the world. She also performs in dialogue with internationally renowned artists of the western tradition as well as with North Indian musicians.

She has a unique voice with a rich timbre and a certain attractive huskiness to it.

She was born and raised in Mumbai – a city whose rich cultural life embraces the majority of India’s artistic fields – into a family with a deep love for music.

Her early tutelage was under her mother Smt Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and she later became a disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Padmasri  Smt T Brinda.

Her renditions whether it is a padam or a composition of the Trinity or an abhang of a Maharashtrian Mystic, seem to cast a seductive spell over her audience that comprises of people from all age groups and all sections of the society, whether the venue is Le Theatre de la Ville in Paris or The Music Academy in Chennai.

The huge crowds that throng her concerts, the adulation and the standing ovations that mark them have not in any manner affected her equipoise. The disarming smile that she sports on stage, instantly communicates her joy in singing to the audience.

Recently The Outlook Magazine made the following observation:

“M S Subbulakshmi is no more. But if there is any singer who comes close to matching such purity of voice, diction, impeccable sruti alignment and frill-free singing, it is Aruna Sairam.”
